Kirti’s POV
Morning came too early.
I woke up before sunrise and quietly started finishing all the household work. Cleaning, cooking, arranging everything perfectly—just the way she liked it.
Maybe today she wouldn’t find a reason to shout at me.
I was just about to get ready when the door suddenly opened.
“Stop right there.”
Her voice.
My stepmother stood at the door, her eyes filled with the same hatred I had grown used to.
“You’re not stepping out of this room today,” she said coldly. “The groom’s family is coming to see your sister. I don’t want your unlucky face ruining anything.
”
My hands froze.
“I’ve already done all the work… the food is ready,” I said softly, trying not to cry.
“Good. Then go lock yourself in your room after finishing everything properly. And don’t you dare show your face.”
Her words hurt… but I was used to it.
Still, today mattered.
“Maa… please,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “I have a job interview today. I won’t stay at home. I promise I won’t come in front of anyone. Please… just let me go.”
For a moment, she stayed silent.
Maybe she realized it was better if I wasn’t home at all.
“Fine,” she said finally. “Go. But don’t come back before evening.”
That was enough for me.
I quickly got ready.
A simple white kurta, blue jeans, small jhumkas… I left my hair open and applied a little kajal. Nothing special. Just… me.
Grabbing my bag, I rushed out of the house.
I was late.
Very late.
I kept running, my heart pounding loudly in my chest. I couldn’t lose this chance. Not today.
And then—
Thud.
I collided with someone.
For a second, it felt like I had hit a wall.
I stumbled back, slightly dizzy, and looked up.
And then I saw him.
Those eyes.
Deep brown… intense… unreadable.
For a moment, I forgot everything.
“Are you blind?” he said in a deep, cold voice. “Can’t you see where you’re going?”
That snapped me out of it.
Excuse me?!
“Oh really, Mister?” I shot back, annoyed
. “You came in front of me like a wall! For a second, I thought my head was gone!”
He didn’t even bother replying.
Instead, he stepped forward… right onto my fallen documents.
My anger shot up instantly.
“Hey!”
Before he could walk away, I snatched his file from his hand and, without thinking twice, pressed my lipstick-stained lips against it—leaving a mark.
“Now we’re even,” I muttered.
And I walked away.
But as I left…
Those eyes stayed in my mind
Somehow, I reached the interview.
Despite everything… I gave it my best.
And I got selected.
I couldn’t believe it.
Me. With barely enough qualifications… still got the job.
It was an NGO.
A globally known one… famous for its kindness and work.
For the first time in a long while… I felt something close to happiness.
When I checked the time, it was already 5 PM.
I froze.
Should I go home?
No.
If I go now… she’ll tear me apart.
So I stayed out.
I went to a nearby park and sat there, watching children play. After some time, I joined them.
For a little while… I forgot everything.
At 7 PM, I finally returned home.
As I reached the gate, I noticed several expensive cars parked outside.
They were still here.
Panic hit me instantly.
Without wasting a second, I quietly moved towards the back gate and slipped inside, making sure no one saw me.
Slowly… carefully… I made my way to my room.
Unnoticed.
Like I was never there.
